December 1, 2004 Seminar Minutes and Presentation Download

The Fall meeting was a success!  Thanks go out to our vendor sponsors, Nastel and Compuware Corporation, for providing the breakfast and lunch.  As usual, the facilities provided by ISO were first rate.  Without the support of companies and vendors, we would not have the exchange of ideas, not to mention the networking, that take place at these meetings.  Thanks also go out to the members who work hard behind the scenes to make it look easy.

9:00 am - 10:00 am Large Travel Provider On Demand Service Oriented Architecture
PRESENTER:  Rolando Franco, Chief Architect - Travel & Car Rental Project

Rolando discussed the value of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and how Web Services technologies were employed to provide the foundation of an enterprise On Demand solution for a large client in Travel & Transportation Industry. The power of an enterprise middleware infrastructure and service oriented application framework to front-end existing real-time rental, reservation and billing legacy system supporting the large travel provider over thousands of worldwide businesses was readily apparent. The value of the Enterprise Service Broker architecture was seen showing how it provided a flexible, loosely coupled architecture built upon standards-based messaging using SOAP over HTTP and JMS/WebSphere MQ.

10:00 am – 11:00 am Readying MQ-based Applications for Production PRESENTER: George Kachnowski, Product Consultant, Compuware Corporation

George highlighted the need to consider customer service level requirements at the same time the application functionality needs are being addressed.  Designing clear application tiers provide independent functional layers that encourages functional independence, isolated testing, and minimal dependency between tiers.  A number of challenges with suggestions for solutions were provided for managing the gap between development and production deployment.

11:15 pm - 12: 15 am How To Effectively Monitor The Flow and Performance of Your Business Transactions
PRESENTER: Albert Mavashev, Vice President of Research & Development for Nastel Technologies

If you have Service Levels Agreements (SLAs) to meet, you've got to track the performance of the Messages and Transactions. Unless your SLAs are totally lame, you need to monitor the performance of their transactions in real-time. How can you effectively watch the flow and performance of transactions as they occur? How can you see what is happening in the infrastructure they are running on? What are the possibilities and benefits of correlating these 2 important perspectives?
