June 1, 2006 Seminar Minutes and Presentation Download

The meeting was held at UBS in New Jersey.  Well over 100 members attended this session which had a major focus on Message Broker.  We would like to thank Bill Gebhardt and Skip Wagner for donating the site and managing the logistics.  Also, thanks to IBM for providing breakfast and lunch.

Wayne Schutz, Senior Solutions Architect, IBM Software Services for WebSphere presented Stateful Programming Patterns using Message Broker V6.  Stateful flows allow for more complex usage patterns of the Broker, since information can be easily retained outside of a single instance of a message flow.  This was a very informative session where several new and updated nodes, including    the Timeout node, MQGet node, SHARED variables, the new Aggregate nodes and the Broker Cache nodes were discussed along with several programming patterns for usage of these nodes.

Dennis Slater, CTO Partsearch went into detail showing how to use Java Compute Nodes in message flows. Dennis described best practices for using Java based nodes along with some not so obvious pitfalls. Also covered was the development process from engineering to construction.  This was illustrated by live examples with references to recent projects using this methodology.  Comparisons were also made with similar ESQL based development.

Jenny Chow, Senior Certified WebSphere Integration Solution Specialist introduced WebSphere TX Extender for WebSphere Message Broker Users.  Although most people use WebSphere Message Broker and Websphere Transformation eXtender (TX) products separately, Jenny explained the key usages and history of WebSphere TX, and how it can bring a significant amount of value and capabilities to the WebSphere Message Broker users. WebSphere TX has Plug-in Nodes available today for Message Broker.  An EDI transformation via the TX Plug-In Node was demonstrated.

Bobbee Broderick, Consultant, reviews many of the capabilities built into Message Broker, along with best practices for development projects.  He reviewed the importance of the development framework and many of the features to support team development.  While good teamwork requires good leadership and good team players, many features of the Message Broker enable team development, particularly in source control.  A number of best practices were reviewed which included design standards, message set/message flow best practices, and flow design for reuse and performance.  Many examples were provided in the presentation.
